Message in a Bottle

It's not often that I get sent press releases and when I do receive them more often than not they are usually from some agency or other seeking free advertising in exchange for a "story."

Yesterday, however, I received something a bit different from the Vigo Rugby Club in Spain.

Entitled "A MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE FOR JONAH LOMU" the press release was from the 'infantile and cadet category' (which I interpret to mean the junior section) of Vigo Rugby Club who have written to Mr Lomu to explain the economic difficulties that the club is currently experiencing, difficulties that threaten its very existence.

The aim of the letter is that it reaches Mr Lomu in Auckland via the six degrees of separation theory that holds that we are connected to any person in the world through a chain of 6 interpersonal acquaintances. The letter, which has been placed in a bottle, is currently on its way to Dublin in the possession of ex-Malahide player and current Vigo resident Joe Scully.

The message isn't a begging letter, but it is hoped that the support of Jonah Lomu and the publicity generated by this innovative and unusual campaign, will raise funds which will help the club to survive.

I'm more than happy therefore to publish the text of the letter below:

Pues yo me he encontrado con esta otra noticia en Faro de Vigo. Este medio está haciendo un gran seguimiento a la iniciativa y no es el único. Gracias a todos ellos por seguir un tema tan original y por un deporte que, desgraciadamente, sigue siendo minoritario en nuestro país.

BRUCE COOK SE CONVIERTE EN EL NUEVO PORTADOR DE LA BOTELLA A LOMU / BRUCE COOK BECOMES THE NEW CARRIER OF THE BOTTLE TO LOMU

Bruce Cook, figura clave del rugby a nivel mundial, se ha convertido en el segundo receptor de la botella a Lomu. Ray Keane, ex jugador del Malahide RFC, fue el encargado de entregarle la botella a Cook en Dublín. De esta forma se materializa el segundo grado del mensaje en la botella a Lomu, sistema a través del cual los chicos del Vigo Rugby Club quieren hacerle llegar la botella al ex jugador neozelandés. Todavía faltan cuatro grados para que la botella llegue a Lomu y confirmar así la teoría de los seis grados, aquella que dice que estamos conectados con cualquier persona del mundo a través de seis contactos interpersonales.

Bruce Cook, key international rugby figure, has become the second recipient of the bottle to Lomu. Ray Keane, ex Malahide RFC player, was the person in charge of giving the bottle to Cook in Dublin. In this way, it is materialized the second degree of the message in a bottle to Lomu, a system by which the kids of the Vigo Rugby Club want to give the bottle to the ex New Zealander player. There are still four degrees for the bottle to reach Lomu and then confirm the six degrees theory, that says that we are all connected with anyone in the world through 6 interpersonal acquaintances.

¿Qué es la IRB?

Cook es actualmente miembro de la International Rugby Board (IRB) y en el pasado fue entrenador del equipo australiano de rugby: Waratahs.

La IRB es la institución que coordina las federaciones de rugby a nivel internacional. Se fundó el 1 de enero de 1886 con el nombre de International Rugby Football Board por Escocia, Gales e Irlanda, siendo después miembro Inglaterra en 1890. Su sede está en Dublín. El seguimiento de la botella puede realizarse a través del blog mensajealomu.blogspot.com que en tan sólo 1 mes ha recibido más de 2.300 visitas. Además, la iniciativa ha contado con el respaldo de numerosos blogs, tanto del ámbito nacional como internacional (Argentina, Gran Bretaña, Rumanía…) que se han hecho eco de la noticia y la han publicado en su espacio.

More than 2,300 visits to the blog

The tracking of the bottle can be made through the blog mensajealomu.blogspot.com that has received in only 1 month more than 2,300 visits. Besides, the initiative has counted on the support of many national blogs but also international ones (from Argentina, Great Britain, Romania...) that have echoed the piece of news and have published it in their sites.

Resulta que Microsoft ya comprobó por la red la teoría de los seis grados en 2007. A través del Messenger e involucrando a 30.000 personas, demostró que al menos hacen falta 6,6 contactos...lo del ,6 no queda muy claro quien es...pero lo que importa es que nosotros lo vamos a hacer a pelo, sin los contactos de una empresa como Microsoft. Porque esta semana tenemos casi seguro otro contacto, esperamos que hacia el fin de semana podamos confirmar el nuevo portador....la botella triunfará...

It turns out that Microsoft already tryed out the theory of six degrees by 2007 in teh web. Through the Messenger and involving 30,000 people, showed that at least 6.6 is needed about the contacts ... ,6 is not very clear who is ... but what matters is that we're going to do the chain better than a company like Microsoft. Because this week we´re almost certainly near to another contact, we hope toward the weekend we can confirm the new carrier will .... the bottle´ll win ...
