Joe Scully, Vigo Rugby Club former player and first carrier of the bottle, starts the Six Degrees. In the picture, Scully arrives to Vigo Airport boarding gates. The bottle is in its way to Dublin.

La carta/The letter

A Jonah Lomu

Leyenda All Black

Estimado Jonah:

To Jonah Lomu

Legend of All Black

Dear Jonah,

We are writing to you this letter because you are the best rugby player of all time for us and because, in the hard moments we are going through, you are our role model.

We are the infantile and cadet players of the Vigo Rugby Team. Vigo is an industrial city of the Atlantic coast of Spain. There are not many fans by our sport here, but as you will know, when the passion for rugby arouses oneself, it is all the same there were many or few people on the terraces.

That´s why you will understand that, in normal conditions, playing rugby here is not easy. But now, with the economic crisis, the situation has turned worst. Unemployment is growing up around us, the companies close down and the horizon looks really bad.

This situation affects us especially because we live it in our families, also in the team surroundings. This year we start the competition without sponsors. Those we had have just gone because their situation has got worse. Finally we have been able to jump on the pitch once again thanks to the veterans of the team that have got involved and have afforded us the money.

As you will see, we don´t have a lot of reasons for being happy, but we have one to continue fighting: the rugby. Our trainer always insists on the fact that it is necessary to fall in order to learn to stand up. And that is what we do everyday… and the trick we use to stand up faster and in a stronger way is thinking on legends of our sport like you are, running and crushing your adversaries. Jonah you are the best.

And that is all. We don´t want to write a letter to cry. This is a fighting message, to don’t give up. We greet you, Jonah, with the hope for being, some day, so strong as you are, physically and minded.

Best wishes from all the infantile, cadet and training schools of the Vigo Rugby Club.

A letter about one letter

The initiative Message in a Bottle to Jonah Lomu is the result of a crossroads, what is explained like this:

In December of 2008, it was organized in Madrid a meeting of experts in communication to analyze the sector beyond the current economic crisis. There were many conclusions but, as the objective was not to theorize, finally we decided to throw our particular SOS to the rough sea. We did it combining the technological furor with the common sense, or what is the same, returning the social networking, whose were appropriated by the 2.0 Web, to their origin, which considers that we are connected physically –and this is the most important thing- with any human in the planet through six personal contacts.

In this meeting was decided what and who. Really, in a first moment were raised different names but, for one or another motive, finally they didn´t consolidate. With the exception of one, Jonah Lomu, who is the best rugby player of all time for many people.

The problem posed in that moment was how to start up the Message in a Bottle. And here the road began turning into a crossroad. The Vigo rugby team, to which I belonged a few years ago, needs sponsors. By the moment, waiting to get them, the structure of the club (from the infantile schools to the senior team) is remained by the ex rugby players. As you can sense, the situation is more and more complicated.

There is where we find the content for the Message in a Bottle to Jonah Lomu. A simple letter written by children that persist in playing a sport that, in these latitudes, is always at the point of disappearing. A simple letter that asks for nothing, It only explains the hard reality what I have just describe with the objective that the world –all the world- knows that in Vigo, a team of nuts continues fighting by its right to be it. With crisis and without it, because the crisis they have is a permanent one.

From the crossroads has been created a bottle. It has gone out from Vigo to Dublin and it must travel all over the world to arrive at New Zealand. We hope good winds and best wishes guide it.

I attest all this, in Madrid the 13th of March of 2009.
