The Message in a bottle to Loum comes back from New Zealand

Nine months after its departure from Vigo, the bottle to Jonah Lomu has traveled around the world. In fact, more 41,000 kms from its departure last 26th March (Vigo-Dublin, Dublin-Wellington (New Zealand), Wellington-Dublin and Dublin-France). After its voyage to New Zealand, it has come back to Europe and now it is in France, where it is expected it will reach its objective in some weeks: the delivering of the bottle to Lomu.

Jean Luc Barthés, IRB representative (International Rugby Board) for the African continent and ex Castres Olympic player, is the new carrier of the bottle which contains the Message to Lomu from the children of the Vigo Rugby Club.

Paddy O´Brien, New Zelander international referee and current IRB referee manager, was the former carrier of the bottle. Paddy O’Brien had received the bottle in Dublin from Bruce Cook, IRB Development Manager, making possible the third degree of this chain whose final receptor is the New Zealander star Jonah Lomu.

A return journey
When Paddy O´Brien took the bottle to New Zealand in order to delivering it to its final addresee, he meets in the way with Jonah Lomu, that travelled to Europe to signing for the Marseille Vitroles.
Coinciding with the stay of the bottle in New Zealand, the girls of the High Scholl of the city of Invercargill, that knew about the initiative through the blog (mensajealomu.blogspot.com) created a group in their social net in order to support the children of Vigo in their initiative. This experience has made possible that around fifty children located in the antipodes have met each other thanks to the bottle to Lomu.

A complex net of contacts and journeys
Back to Europe, the bottle met an old acquaintance. Bruce Cook received again the bottle from Paddy in an exciting return journey. In Cook converges two degrees of this journey (he was the second recipient of the message and now he has become in the fourth degree). He explains this circumstance in the following way: “for some prominent members of the IRB this initiative is moving and it has motivated us to get involved in this cause because it summarizes the more deep values of our sport”.

Message in a bottle
The initiative “Message in a bottle to Jonah Lomu” comes from the infantile and cadet categories of the Vigo Rugby Club. The children tell to the ex All Blacks player in a letter the economic difficulties they are going through in order to play this sport. In the letter they do not ask anything from Jonah Lomu, but acknowledgement of receipt.

The journey of the bottle can be followed through the blog created to tell the story of the Message to Lomu: mensajealomu.blogspot.com. To this day, 14,000 visits have been received and have come comments and entries from several parts of the world. France, Ireland, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay, Italy, Romania and the USA are some of the countries that have become interested by the initiative and have visited the blog.

For those that love celebrities, the Madame Tussaud Museum waits them with many surprises, all of them in wax. Such us sportmen like David Beckham or Jose Mourinho or well-known people of Politics, social and cultural sphere of all the world.

Vigo and New Zealand, determined to become twin cities

First it was the message in a bottle to Lomu and now we find that it's been promoted a campaing to twin Vigo with its antipodes in New Zealand. An artist from Vigo has discovered that the antipodes of Vigo are not located int eh sea, but in a little town of New Zealand called Barrytown. It seems that destiny wants that Vigo and New Zealand are united ... We still pay attention to the route of the bottle and we hope it reach its destination soon.

Castres, destiny city

Hi fellows, we know little by little of the adventures of our almost old friend bottle. In principle, it seems that the match in which the bottle will find its destination will be the match that will meet the Marseille team and the Cartes Olympic... from the city of Cartes.

The truth is that it seems an exciting place, it is part of the French way to Santiago, so somebody from the city will appear in Galicia this year. In addittion, it also has stories full of witches an hidden places among big granite blocks, what gives it a Galician air. In this city there were Catares and other heretic inhabitants, they have the second bigger Spanish museum, the Goya Museum... anyway, it's going to be like being at home...

Come on, that is nearer ...

We were going to comment it in another post, but for create the sense of expectancy, we tell you that the Castres Olympic is first on the French top 14 , it can be a great match...

Everything changes under the sun

What had come to us as a remote rumour, has became true. Our black beast takes off his t-shirt (and trousers), and shows us an unexpected narcisim outbreak (excuses for practicers). We send you this picture taken from the last contest of the Wellington Bodybuilding Championships, in Victoria, Australia. Here we can see our champion showing his chest althoug, only between us, he doesn't look so awesome.

In declarations to the Press, he says that bodybuilding has been a great discovery, that it helps him to achieve a satisfactory mental stability and a very instructive control of his food...

"Before difficulties, surmounting "

The Vigo press echoes today the presentation of the Vigo Rugby Club that took place yesterday and outlines that this is a difficult season, but this is a club ready to face setbacks. The media also commented that the message in a bottle to Lomu is running and that is near giving another step. We hope the fourth grade can be materialized soon and we make ourselves a question, would the bottle remained in New Zealand or would it come back yet to Europe looking for Lomu?...

Babé Announces during the Presentation of the VRC that the Bottle is near reaching its addressee

During the official presentation of the first team of the Vigo Rugby Club - which this season will play in the Spanish Honor Divission B- the President of the Club, Ramón Babé, announced that the bottle with the message from the children to the New Zealander ex-All Blacks player, Jonah Lomu, is near to its addressee.

During the last four months, the bottle has remained in New Zealand. The chance would that the bottle crossed in the air with Lomu, which travelled to Europe in May to sign with the Marseille Vitrolles (France). "It was quite humorous carrying the bottle in my hand luggage so it would not get broken, and after getting it half way round the world finding that the recipient virtually passed me in mid air going back the other way", explained Paddy O'Brien, international referee and the International Rugby Board (IRB) Referee Manager and, up to the moment, the last carrier of the bottle.

Message in a Bottle

The initiative "Message in a bottle to Jonah Lomu" comes from the infantile and cadet categories of the Vigo Rugby Club in order to explain to the ex-All Blacks player the difficulties they are facing to play this Sport.

The team kids gave the bottle to Joe Scully, ex-Vigo Rugby Club player, at the end of March. The objective is that it can reach New Zealand, where Jonah Lomu lives, through six contacts at the most. For the moment, three of them have been materialized: Joe Scully gave it to Ray Keane, ex-player of the Irish Malahide RFC. Ray Keane did the same to Bruce Cook, Development Manager of the IRB and Bruce Cook gave it to Paddy O'Brien.

Rugby Seven to 2016

Soon we will know where the next 2016 Olympic Games will be, but in Copenhage will also be decided if Rugby Seven is going to be an olympic game or not. Lomu has signed by the IRB to go with the Olympic Delegation to support the Olympic candidature.

We know that rugby as well as golf obtained last August the recommendation of the Executive Olympic Committee, although now we expect for the final votation that confirm rugby in its Seven modality as olympic game.

"Seven has the right ingredients to be an olympic game. It is of high level, competitive, electrifying and it gave possibilities to the smallest countries to gain medals", explain the great ex-All Black.

From here, we join to the idea of seeing rugby gainning medals in the 2016 Olympic Games...

Get them Jonah.

Bruce Cook: "Make no mistake about it, we will get the bottle to the main man"

The signing of Jonah Lomu with the Marseille Vitrolles broke the plans of Bruce Cook, the International Rugby Board Development Manager that received the bottle in Ireland from Ray Keane, ex-player of the Malahide RFC. He carried it in his hand luggage to New Zealand while Lomu was doing the reverse journey to France.

In our conversation with Cook, he explains to us that "It has been the subject of a few phone calls and emails and quite a bit of planning. Once we tracked Jonah down in New Zealand it became obvious that I should give the message in a bottle to my IRB colleague Paddy O'Brien who lives in NZ, to get it to him. However, after Paddy took it to NZ we found out that Jonah had gone to France to play Rugby".

'It was really quite humorous carrying the bottle in my hand luggage so it would not get broken, and after getting it half way round the world finding that the recipient virtually passed me in mid air going back the other way', said O'Brien.

Cook intends that O'Brien gets the 'message in a bottle' back in a couple of months and to make some plans to get it to Jonah. "Make no mistake about it, we will get the bottle to the main man".

Spanish Kids also Reach the Rugby Mecca

Source: tinta digital
The passion of Àlvar Gimeno (born December 15, 1997) is playing rugby. For this reason he decided to go to New Zealand, birthplace of the best players of the world, and join the Burnside RFC. The Burnside is the club from which some of the best players of the world have come, as the All Blacks - name by which the members of the New Zealand selection are known- Brad Thorn or Wayne Crocket.

Despite of being one of the pillars of his team, the CAU Valencia, and being one of the authors of its triumph last season, his leaving to the rugby mecca resulted a tough proof. Àlvar landed on New Zealand when the league had been started. This affected his first actuations with the team, but his aptitudes made him one of the fixed names in the lineup of this team of the first division of Christchurch.

Finally, hard work was awarded with the Championship of the league in the first team under 12 of Burningside as an undisputed regular player. Now, back in Spain, he misses the facillities and media repercussion of rugby in New Zealand.
"This experience has been like a dream. I have played rugby 15, in grass fields and in a country bent over backwards with rugby. The intensity the rugby is experienced here is awesome" explains Àlvar.

Now he goes back to Valencia to face a new season with the club of his life, the CAU. His friends are waiting for him with the hope of winning again the national championship. The land fields, the reduced espace in a shared field and the scarce media attention will be again his travel mates. Although the hope of young people like Àlvar will face the shortage of means.

"Me encuentro fenomenal.

Lomu, in Marseille and ready to play

You can just see him in this video. Lomu is in Marseille willing to play rugby... and waiting for the bottle. "I feel fine. There's nothing left about health problems. It's all in the past". Lionel Toniti, vicepresident of Marseille Vitroles, only hopes that Lomu 'is psicologically prepared' for playing in the French third division.

New Zealand is in fashion in Galicia

While we were reading 'El Pais' today, we found a piece of news that seems to us very peculiar because of the similarities shown between Galicia and New Zealand. Do you know that the representative bird of this country is called 'Tui', like the Galician municipality in Pontevedra? And that on the West coast, near the sea, there is a town called 'Aranga' like the Galician one in A Coruña?

Some New Zealander researchers are currently in Galicia in order to know if the first people arriving the island were Spanish or Portuguese people. Historically it's said that the British explorer Cook was the first person in arriving the island in 1769.

Another curiosity that we found in the piece of news is that in the yard of the police station of Monte Alto in A Coruña is grewing a centenary tree from New Zealand, a 'metrosidero' or 'pohutukawa' as it's called by the Mahori people.

Preparamos un encuentro online con las chicas de Invercargill‏ / We and the Girls from Invercargill preparate an on line meeting

This picture has been taken today; but twelve hours before we wake up in Spain. Behind them, a gigantic map of Spain in which they have pointed the main cities and, above all, they have placed a great sign that indicates Vigo. In the next weeks we will meet each other more.

Nos escriben chicas de Nueva Zelanda que quieren conocernos/Girls from New Zealand write to meet us

Hola chicos

Saludos y buena suerte

Girls from New Zealand write to meet us

Hi guys

We are 12-13 year-old girls from Southland Girls' High School in Invercargill, New Zealand, exactly in the opposite side of the world from Vigo. We have read about the problems of your rugby club and about the 'Message in a Bottle' that you have sent to Jonah Lomu. Paddy O'brien, the referee that received the bottle recently, is from Invercargill and his daughter is an student of our school.

In our subject Travel the World we are learning a little bit of Spanish, for instance, Spanish greetings, numbers, colours, the alphabet, the family, etc. Our Spanish alphabet can be seen on You Tube - look for kgferg50 - very funny, isn't it? Next year we can learn the Spanish language.

We like rugby as well as you, and five or six people of our class normally play it.

We hope you receive this e-mail and you can write back to our teacher's address - kgfergus@ihug.co.nz (This is the correct address)

We'd love to send you a picture of us.

Regards and good luck
